Barntown Castle

The four storey Barntown Castle is thought to have been built around 1171 at more or less the same time as Ferry-Carrigg Castle. To this day you can still see the “murder hole” where the owners could pour harmful substances down on any unsuspecting busy body! Some say it was built by Robert Fitz-Stephen who was the first Anglo-Norman invader of Ireland. He most likely landed at Bannow so that shower have a lot to answer for as well. Would ya believe that the Mayor of Wexford also used to live at Barntown Castle. Born in 1774, Shephard Jeffaries was first elected Mayor in 1840.
